Seoul, South Korea: Abhijit Bhand attended the Global Korea Forum 2023, organized by the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences (NRC) in collaboration with the Prime Minister's Office of the Republic of Korea, held in Seoul as the flagship event of Development Cooperation Week 2023. The forum brought together senior policymakers, government representatives, diplomats, researchers, international development experts, think tanks, and private sector leaders from across the globe to discuss Korea's evolving role in international development cooperation and the future of global partnerships.
Recognized as one of Korea's leading policy dialogue platforms on development cooperation, the forum focused on evaluating the country's Official Development Assistance (ODA) initiatives while exploring innovative approaches to sustainable economic development and international collaboration. The event provided participants with opportunities to engage with experts involved in designing and implementing development policies across multiple regions.
A major highlight of the forum was its emphasis on regional partnerships and evidence-based policymaking. Discussions examined collaborative development initiatives, including joint research supporting Indonesia's "Making Indonesia 4.0" industrial transformation strategy and economic sector analyses aimed at strengthening development planning in Cambodia and Indonesia. Speakers highlighted how research-driven policy interventions, institutional cooperation, and knowledge exchange can accelerate inclusive economic growth and sustainable development in partner countries.
The forum also featured extensive discussions on public-private cooperation, underscoring the growing importance of partnerships between governments, international organizations, research institutions, and industry. Representatives from leading Korean corporations, including POSCO and CJ Group, shared experiences on integrating private sector innovation with national and international development objectives. The discussions illustrated how collaboration between public institutions and businesses can enhance the effectiveness of development assistance by combining policy expertise with technological capability and investment.

Reflecting on the event, Abhijit Bhand observed that sustainable international development increasingly depends on strong partnerships between governments, academia, research institutions, and the private sector. He noted that development cooperation has evolved beyond financial assistance, placing greater emphasis on knowledge sharing, technology transfer, institutional capacity building, and collaborative innovation.
Bhand also remarked that the forum demonstrated how evidence-based policymaking and international cooperation can contribute to addressing complex global challenges such as industrial modernization, digital transformation, and sustainable economic growth. According to him, Korea's development model offers valuable lessons for emerging economies seeking to strengthen innovation ecosystems through strategic public policy and international collaboration.
Drawing from his background in intellectual property and innovation policy, Bhand further observed that effective development cooperation should also recognize the importance of intellectual property systems in promoting technology diffusion, commercialization of innovation, and research collaboration. He noted that balanced intellectual property frameworks can encourage innovation while facilitating cross-border partnerships that support long-term socio-economic development.
The Global Korea Forum 2023 reaffirmed Korea's commitment to strengthening international development partnerships through research, policy dialogue, and collaborative action. For Abhijit Bhand, attending the forum provided valuable insights into contemporary development strategies, international governance, and the role of innovation-driven policies in fostering inclusive and sustainable global development.
