The webinar brought together students, researchers, innovators, startup founders, and aspiring entrepreneurs associated with the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Guwahati. The programme was designed to provide participants with practical insights into protecting pharmaceutical innovations and understanding how effective intellectual property management contributes to research commercialization and sustainable innovation.

During the session, Mr. Bhand explained the strategic importance of intellectual property rights in the pharmaceutical industry, where research and development demand substantial investments of time, expertise, and financial resources. He discussed how patents encourage innovation by providing inventors with exclusive rights while simultaneously promoting scientific disclosure and technological advancement. The session emphasized that a well-planned intellectual property strategy is essential not only for protecting novel pharmaceutical inventions but also for attracting investors, facilitating collaborations, securing regulatory advantages, and enabling successful market entry.

Participants were introduced to the legal and practical aspects of protecting pharmaceutical innovations, including patentability requirements, novelty assessment, inventive step, industrial applicability, drafting considerations, prior art searching, and the importance of maintaining confidentiality before filing patent applications. The discussion also explored intellectual property challenges commonly encountered by pharmaceutical startups, academic researchers, and biotechnology innovators during the commercialization process.

Recognizing the increasing convergence of research, technology, and entrepreneurship, the webinar further highlighted the significance of integrating intellectual property considerations into every stage of product development. Mr. Bhand shared practical guidance on developing robust IP portfolios, protecting collaborative research outcomes, managing ownership of inventions, and leveraging intellectual property for licensing, technology transfer, and business expansion. Real-world examples and practical case studies were discussed to demonstrate how strategic IP management has enabled pharmaceutical companies and research-driven startups to transform innovative ideas into commercially successful products.

The programme concluded with an engaging interactive discussion, during which participants raised several insightful questions on pharmaceutical patent protection, regulatory exclusivities, patent filing strategies for academic institutions, technology transfer mechanisms, startup commercialization pathways, and emerging intellectual property issues in the life sciences sector. The enthusiastic participation reflected the growing awareness among researchers and entrepreneurs regarding the strategic importance of intellectual property in fostering innovation within the pharmaceutical ecosystem.

The successful organization of the webinar was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the Bio-NEST NIPER Guwahati Incubation Centre, whose initiative in organizing the programme as part of the World IP Day celebrations created an excellent platform for knowledge exchange between intellectual property professionals and the next generation of pharmaceutical innovators. The institute's continued commitment to nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship through such capacity-building initiatives is highly commendable.

Through expert lectures, professional training programmes, and industry-focused workshops across academic institutions, incubation centres, and innovation ecosystems, Mr. Abhijit Bhand continues to contribute towards strengthening intellectual property awareness and fostering a culture of innovation-led growth. His sessions bridge the gap between intellectual property law and its practical application, empowering researchers, startups, and innovators to effectively protect, manage, and commercialize their intellectual assets.
